Weather in Texas can be unpredictable and bring conditions that may impact our community
and cause school closures. The superintendent may close schools due to severe weather or
emergencies that might produce safety concerns. If a weather or emergency situation causes a
delayed school start, early dismissal or closure of schools, Blanco ISD will notify parents and staff
using ParentSquare. Information will also be communicated through the BISD social media
accounts. Austin and San Antonio news stations are also provided information to share during
their broadcasts.

INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURES AND CONDITION MONITORING
When we first learn of major weather events that might impact our area, we begin to carefully
monitor the situation utilizing the National Weather Service based in Austin. We also open the
lines of communication with our county and city officials.

During the day or evening prior to a forecasted weather event, we consider the need to close
school the following day based on predictions from area weather experts. The superintendent
will collaborate with area districts to gain a better understanding of how the entire region is
affected by inclement weather and their response to it. While each district is unique, this
partnership allows all districts to have a more complete understanding of weather conditions.
It is ideal to make a decision early enough to enable all of our stakeholders time to plan ahead.
Unfortunately, that is not always possible.

If a decision is not made in advance, a response will be reported by 5:30 am. Beginning around
4:00 am, the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, Director of Maintenance and
Transportation and the Athletic Director will drive key roads and bridges in the district to
determine if travel is safe or not. We will also be in close contact with local law enforcement and
TxDOT to make an informed decision on the safety of road conditions.

The safety of our students, parents and staff guide any decision to delay or cancel school due to
inclement weather and the decision is informed by reliable information from all sources.
The standard assumption is that school is open unless a closure or
delayed start notification is publicized through the outlets noted above.
