Study Skills 1-2 Syllabus

Students will come to class with materials prepared to work on study skills. They will apply these skills to maintain the organization of all required binders for enrolled courses and complete coursework within the time limits provided by their teachers. District wide cell phone policy states: Students are not allowed to have their phones out during class time unless they are specifically being used for the lesson/activity. Students may only use their phones in the mornings before class and during lunch. We will store all cell phones in a designated box above the students cubbies at the beginning of class.

I expect my students to participate in class and treat themselves and others with respect. We need your cooperation in creating a safe and creative learning environment in our classroom. Each class period will begin with a daily journal warm-up consisting of a vocabulary word definition and usage sentence, a synonym match, and a short reading/writing prompt. The remainder of class period is for tutoring, as needed, and completion of other coursework or independent reading. Your journal is a daily grade and will be 30% of your grade in this class and should be completed within the first 10 to 15 minutes of the period and is due each Friday.

60% of your grade will be assessed on your ability to apply your study skills, such as, binder organization, your ability to use your six week planner/calendar forms to complete and turn in your assignments in your classes on time, and to manage your time responsibly in your enrolled courses. I will assess this grade by monitoring the completion of your assignments in your classes.

The final 10% of your grade is based on your  progress towards productive use of the study skills class.

I look forward to a great year of learning with you all! Welcome back and let’s have fun and work hard.

Students will come to class with materials prepared to begin their daily warm up exercises when the tardy bell rings. They will maintain a binder/ portfolio of their English assignments and written compositions which may be stored in their assigned classroom cubby.

Each class period will begin with a brief daily reading/ writing activity and vocabulary building writing exercise in your journal. This daily grade, along with daily classwork, guided reading participation and Quizzes will be worth 60% of your grade. Warm-up journals are turned in on Friday and graded at the end of each week.

Participation in Classroom activities is also worth 10% of your grade. ( I don’t plan to assign homework unless you fail to participate in class)

The final 30% of your grade will be based on unit tests/projects, essays, and critical writing assignments.

All students will be given the opportunity to correct failing quiz and test grades or rewrite essays for a maximum 70% grade. These corrections will be accepted within three class periods after having the graded work returned during each 6 week grading cycle. Six week, Semester, and EOC exams are not eligible for test corrections so you will have only one opportunity to pass these exams. Please do your very best!

All grades will reflect progress towards relevant Goals and Objectives stated on your IEPs (Individual Education Plan).

I look forward to a great year of learning with you all! Welcome back and let’s have fun and work hard.
