Grading Policy

Grading          is the process by which a teacher assesses student learning and progress towards mastery of course objectives and is aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Grading is a part of the teaching and learning process. This process must include establishing clear learning goals and setting standards and evaluative criteria which guide student learning so changes in instruction are based on assessment data. Additionally, the grading process should provide clear and consistent feedback to student to focus them to ultimately take responsibility for their own learning.

Reporting       is the process by which the teacher communicates information to student and parents/guardians about mastery of content and skills. The formal reporting process includes checklists, report cards and progress reports, emails, telephone conversations and conferences as appropriate.

Daily - 60%    (Homework, section assessments, handouts, chapter assessments, maps, peer teaches, current events, notes, quizzes, exit tickets, participation, etc.)

Major - 40% (Unit tests, composition book test, major projects, benchmarks, six weeks tests, folder)

Folders: All students will keep a Texas History folder.  The folder will include notes, quizzes, and tests.  The folder will serve as a study tool as the students prepare for unit tests, benchmarks, and six weeks tests.  Folders will be due at the end of each six week grading period, and will be recorded as a test grade.

Late work is defined as not being turned in at the appropriate deadline. Example: If the deadline is at the beginning of the period and the assignment is not turned in until the end of the class period, it is considered one day late.

Classroom Rules

All rules in the Student Handbook apply.

  1. Bring all materials to class every day.
  2. Follow directions the first time they are given.
  3. Be in your seat and prepared to work before the bell rings. If you are out of your seat you will be marked as tardy. No Exceptions!
  4. Respect the people and furnishings of this classroom.
  5. Electronic devices are not allowed in class (iPods, cell phones, mp3 players, etc...)
  6. Receive permission before speaking or leaving your seat.
  7. No food or drink allowed unless stated otherwise.

Classroom Procedures

Bell ringers- Everyday the class will have a warm-up activity.  The bell ringer will consist of activities such as the daily quiz, anticipation guides, brainstorming, quotes, reading assignments, or instructions.  Students are expected to work independently and quietly during this time.

Absences

Students shall be permitted to make up assignments and tests following any absence. All students will receive credit for satisfactory makeup work after an absence, including excused, unexcused, and unexcused absences due to suspension.

A student will be given as many school days as he/she was absent to make up tests and other missed assignments. Example: 1 day absent = 1 school day to make up work, 3 days absent = 3 school days to make up work.

If a student does not complete the work after an absence in the allotted time, the assignment is considered late work (see late work policy).  Students should not be required, on the day of returning to school to turn in an assignment or take a quiz or test that was announced during the student’s absence. If the assignment, test or quiz was scheduled and/ communicated before the absence, the student will be required to turn in the assignment or take test or quiz.

Exceptions may be granted by the administration in extenuating circumstances.

Extra Curricular Make-Up Work

It is the sole responsibility of the student to collect and/or make arrangements before the scheduled activity and to complete all work that is missed due to extra-curricular activities such as but not limited to Athletics, Band, Stock Shows, etc. All work collected must be completed and turned in upon the students return to school.
